My name is Orla and I am a Clinical Psychologist working in Galway.
Clinical Psychologists are specialist Psychologists with a minimum of six years university training including approved post-graduate studies and clinical placements. Clinical Psychologists are specialists in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of psychological problems and mental illness.
During my decade of professional training I have worked in a broad range of mental health settings including public, private, and forensic. I am trained to work with people in relation to a variety of psychological difficulties, including: anxiety, bereavement, depression, eating disorders, OCD, relationship difficulties, self-harm, stress, and trauma. I believe one of the most important elements of therapy is appreciating the uniqueness of each person and their individual psychological needs. Therefore, my treatment approach is tailored to each individual.
During therapy I am likely to draw on various psychological approaches according, in part, to the problem that is being treated and my assessment of what will be of most use (e.g. CBT, Mindfulness, etc). However, having completed my advanced training in psychodynamic psychotherapy I am especially interested in working within this model. Both empirical literature and my own clinical experience offer evidence that in improving our understanding of conscious and unconscious dynamics we can aid resolution of psychological tensions and conflicts.
I am actively engaged in ongoing professional training opportunities and skills development. In 2018-2019 I completed specialist training in working with sexual violence with the Galway Rape Crisis Centre. I have also been a volunteer with both the Galway Rape Crisis Centre and Bodywhys.
I am a Chartered Member of The Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). As a Psychologist, I am bound by a Professional Code of Ethics, as laid down by the PSI This protects a client’s right to confidential and unbiased treatment.
